The Irish Council Against Blood Sports has launched a new nationwide billboard campaign to highlight the cruelty of hare coursing and the fact that a 77% majority of Irish citizens want it BANNED.
The billboards, featuring an image of a hare being hit by a greyhound at a coursing meet, follow Paul Murphy TD’s newly introduced Animal Health & Welfare (Ban on Hare Coursing) Bill 2020 which aims to secure a long overdue ban on the bloodsport.
The billboards will remind the public that hare coursing is shamefully continuing in Ireland in 2020 and inspire more and more people to get active in demanding a ban.

Hares suffer and die in coursing – last season, the victims included hares who died with a spinal injury and a broken back and another with “an apparent leg injury”. Other hares have suffered broken legs, damaged toes, dislocated hips, etc
All the hares used in coursing suffer the fear and stress of being netted from the wild, transported in boxes and held in captivity for weeks or months before being forced to run for their lives from muzzled dogs. Those released back to the wild after coursing are at risk of later dying from stress-related capture myopathy.
The continuation of coursing shames Ireland. All our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales) have all long since banned the bloodsport – as have most other civilised nations around the world.
Another reason to stop coursing is the emergence of RHD2 – a deadly and highly contagious virus which the National Parks and Wildlife Service has stated can be spread by coursers on their boxes and nets. The previous Minister for Culture and Heritage, Josepha Madigan acknowledged that the virus “has the potential to wipe out the hare population completely”.
Overwhelming support for a ban on coursing was confirmed last September in a RED C opinion poll which found that 77% of citizens are in favour of a ban (with just 9% wanting coursing to continue).
It’s time for Ireland to STOP THE SUFFERING and Ban Hare Coursing.
