More and more horses are losing their lives at racecourses around Ireland. Further to a parliamentary question from Paul Murphy TD (Solidarity-People Before Profit) to the Minister for Agriculture, Horse Racing Ireland released statistics showing that over 1,300 horses have lost their lives at racecourses and point to point races in Ireland since 2012. [Note: These figures do not include the horses killed in training or those who do not make the grade and are destroyed behind-the-scenes].

Taxpayer-funded Horse Racing Ireland revealed the method of killing for injured horses to be either lethal injection or a bullet in the head.

“The clinical vets can assess injured horses and in hopeless situations, on humane grounds, the horse is put to sleep using either lethal injection with Somulose or a free bullet administered by an experienced vet,” a Horse Racing Ireland spokesperson stated.

The revelations about high levels of deaths at races follow the emergence of statistics confirming that thousands of race horses have been slaughtered in Ireland.

In reply to Dail Questions from Paul Murphy TD, Minister Charlie McConalogue provided figures which show that from 2016 to 2023, a total of 15,658 thoroughbred horses were slaughtered at Department of Agriculture-approved facilities. Thousands more have been exported to the UK for slaughter – as revealed in the shocking BBC documentary “The Dark Side of Horse Racing” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlpQhJFd5Bo

Irish horses are also being killed during races in the UK. The victims include horses who suffered broken necks, horses destroyed after breaking legs and horses who collapsed with heart attacks during and after races.

Horse racing at Irish racecourses and at point-to-point events (major fundraisers for foxhunting groups) is supported by massive amounts of taxpayers’ money via the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund. Since 2001, Horse Racing Ireland has received €1,388,904,981 (€1.38 Billion). This includes a €70.4 million grant for 2022, €72.8 million for 2023 and €76 million for 2024.

Much of the money handed over to HRI ends up as prize money in the pockets of wealthy horse owners and trainers.
