With coursing halted under the government’s current Level 5 restrictions, there are renewed calls on Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien to order the immediate release of all hares captured for the bloodsport.
There are growing concerns about the fate of hares held captive in coursing compounds around the country.
“Keeping dozens of hares, normally solitary creatures, in captivity is completely unnatural and should never be permitted,” ICABS stated in an email to Minister O’Brien. “There is also the very worrying issue of RHD2, the highly contagious virus that can spread easily between hares and which your predecessor warned could wipe out the Irish Hare species. Hares affected by the virus suffer the most horrendous death, with swollen eyelids, partial paralysis and bleeding from the eyes and mouth.”
In our appeal to Minister Darragh O’Brien, ICABS reminded him of a statement he made in October when he ordered coursers to release hares as the country moved into the previous Level 5 , i.e. “hares are a protected species, and are better off being in the wild rather than being held in captivity in large groups.”
Please join the appeal to Minister O’Brien to act NOW to ensure that all hares in captivity are released back to the wild under the strict supervision of National Parks and Wildlife Service rangers.
The government must now permanently stop coursing, in line with the majority view that the bloodsport should be banned. According to a RED C poll, 77% of citizens want the government to ban coursing, with just 9% wanting it to continue. With COVID19, RHD2 and the suffering, stress, injury and death caused to hares at coursing meets, there should be absolutely no hesitation in finally ending this shameful activity. This move for Irish wildlife would be widely welcomed in Ireland and around the world.
