Greyhound injuries and deaths at Irish greyhound tracks

27 Mar

1159 greyhounds killed since 2014 copy

At races around Ireland in the past ten years, at least 3,307 greyhounds suffered injuries and 1,194 died or were killed. The Greyhound Racing Ireland figures are based on “reported” injuries and deaths, suggesting that the actual number could be even higher. They do not include the greyhounds injured at tracks and later killed elsewhere, or the thousands of greyhounds who are killed every year because they are not fast enough to win races.

Among the victims at tracks were a greyhound who collapsed after a race and died of a heart attack, a greyhound who was carried away bleeding with a leg bone “popped out”, a greyhound who “collided with a boundary wall and died on impact” and greyhounds who suffered broken necks and died.

Click on the links below to find out more about the victims of greyhound racing at each of the tracks. Show compassion for dogs, stay away from tracks and join calls for a ban on greyhound racing.
