Two hares were found dead in an enclosure at a cruel coursing meeting in Thurles, recently released documents reveal.
The unfortunate hares were among 36 netted from the wild, held in captivity for up to 64 DAYS and forced to run for their lives in a bloodsport shamefully licensed by the Department of Heritage.
Related documents published on the National Parks and Wildlife Service website show that:
On Day 1 (28 October 2023) – 1 hare was hit by greyhounds and another was caught and pinned to the ground. Just one of these hares was examined for injuries by the coursing club’s vet.
On Day 2 (29 October) – 1 hare was “pinned and ran in” to the so-called escape area. This hare was not examined for injuries.
A NPWS ranger who was present to monitor the terrorisation of the hares stated in a report that 2 hares were found dead in the hare park enclosure.
The coursers farcically maintained that these 2 terrorised, manhandled, captive hares – in the most unnatural of circumstances – had “died from natural causes”.
The vet – who shamefully certified the hares “fit for coursing” – noted that the two dead hares were “going to lab for post-mortem” but no details of post-mortem results establishing the cause of death were provided.
The hares used and abused at this coursing meeting were netted from the wild between 27 August 2023 and 21 October 2023. The captures took place under a licence disgracefully issued by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on behalf of Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien (Fianna Fail) and Minister of State for Nature Malcolm Noonan (Green Party).
Shame on the Green Party, Fianna Fail and Fine Gael for allowing this bloodsport to continue, despite majority support among the public for a ban. A 2019 RED C poll found that 77% want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.
Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales).

HELP THE HARES: Tell Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State for Nature Malcolm Noonan to give full protection to the Irish Hare and stop licensing cruel coursing.
