Three hares died from injuries they suffered during a coursing meeting in the constituency of Nature Minister, Malcolm Noonan, newly released documents reveal.
The hares were among 52 netted from the wild under a licence shamefully granted by the Green Party Minister’s Department. They were forced to run for their lives at Sevenhouses coursing meeting on 13, 14 January 2024. https://www.npws.ie/sites/default/files/files/coursing-sevenhouses-2023-2024.pdf

On Day 1 – 3 hares were caught and pinned to the ground by greyhounds. Two of the hares were confirmed injured and one of them died from injuries sustained.
On Day 2 – 1 hare was pinned and confirmed injured by the coursing club’s vet.
As well as the hare who died from injuries on day 1, two other hares were killed.
According to the NPWS ranger who was present on both days to monitor the terrorisation of the hares, these two additional hare deaths occurred on Day 2 (14 January). Meanwhile, the coursers stated that the “2 hares died from injuries” on the day of release (15 January).
In a report form submitted by the coursing club’s vet – who shamefully certified the hares “fit for coursing” – just one of the three hare deaths is recorded.
The hares used and abused at this coursing meeting were netted from the wild between 2 December and 1st January 2024 (5 were netted on New Year’s Day). They were held in captivity for up to 45 days.
Minister of State for Nature Malcolm Noonan is on record as stating “we all want to see hare coursing ended – it’s a cruel practice”. It’s time for him and his department colleague Minister Darragh O’Brien to respect the wishes of the majority who want coursing ended and stop issuing the licences which allow this bloodsport to continue.
Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales).
