45 hares were terrorised at a coursing meeting in the constituency of Minister for Nature Malcolm Noonan and one of them was killed, newly released documents reveal.
Coursers netted the hares from the wild thanks to a licence shamefully granted by the Green Party Minister’s Department. One of the hares suffered injuries so severe, a vet “euthanised” the animal.
Documents published on the website of the National Parks and Wildlife Service reveal that this hare was “put down by the vet as a result of injuries sustained during coursing” at the Mooncoin, County Kilkenny animal cruelty event held on 26, 27 December 2023. https://www.npws.ie/sites/default/files/files/coursing-mooncoin-2023-2024.pdf
On Day 2 of the meeting, 1 hare was pinned by the dogs and “required treatment from vet for injuries”. According to a report by the coursing club’s vet, the hare was “confirmed injured”.
The following day (28 December 2023), when the terrorised hares were being released back to the wild, the vet confirmed that 1 hare was injured – apparently the hare who had been pinned by the dogs the previous day. This hare was killed by the vet.
The hares used and abused at this coursing meeting were netted from the wild between 4 November and 10 December 2023. They were held in captivity for up to 55 days.
Minister of State for Nature Malcolm Noonan – is on record as stating “we all want to see hare coursing ended – it’s a cruel practice”.
The Green Party’s Animal Welfare Policy clearly states: “The Green Party is opposed to all bloodsports and we will bring in legislation to end hare coursing, fox hunting, hare hunting and mink hunting”. However, in 2020, the party’s deputy leader Catherine Martin TD stated that if the Green Party’s government coalition partners Fianna Fail and Fine Gael vote against an upcoming bill to ban coursing, then she would also vote against it “with the heaviest of hearts”.
This is unacceptable. The Green Party must act in accordance with its own policy on the issue and respect the wishes of the 77% majority who want coursing banned.
Previously, Minister Martin said that she “looks forward to a time when these barbaric [bloodsport] practices are outlawed in Ireland” and declared that “the Green Party has always been opposed to all blood sports and remains resolutely so.”
Meanwhile, Green Party leader Eamon Ryan is on record as stating: “I am firmly opposed to the current practice of fox hunting and hare coursing in the country which I feel cannot be defended on the grounds of preserving rural traditions or indeed any other conservation or rural development arguments.”
Shame on the Green Party, Fianna Fail and Fine Gael for allowing this bloodsport to continue, despite majority support among the public for a ban. A 2019 RED C poll found that 77% want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.
Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales).

HELP THE HARES: Tell Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State for Nature Malcolm Noonan to give full protection to the Irish Hare and stop licensing cruel coursing.
