The Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss has completed its deliberations and will shortly be making its recommendations to government.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has congratulated the Assembly, heaping praise on the members for their months of hard work and commitment to their task.
But will the government listen to what this broadly representative “People’s Forum” has to say?
I’ve been campaigning for decades just to get an Irish government to end the persecution of our native hare, a sub-species unique to Ireland that has been in decline for the past half century. Despite threats to its habitat arising from urbanisation and modern agriculture, successive administrations have refused to halt the scandal of live hare coursing.
Even as the Citizens’ Assembly strove to advance the cause of biodiversity, thousands of hares were in captivity at venues nationwide, courtesy of people who thinks it’s fun to set dog on them.
Next month, the current hare-chasing season will culminate in the three-day so-called “festival” of coursing, the national showpiece of the blood sport in Ireland, where hundreds of hares will have to perform for a baying human throng. In scenes reminiscent of the coliseum, animal will be pitted against animal, and the fans will laugh and cheer.
The punters will travel there in vans and four-wheel drives instead of chariots, and they won’t be wearing togas, but the whole spectacle will echo Nero’s carnival of cruelty, albeit in a twenty-first century locale. No lions or exotic creatures, but defenceless little animals twisting and dodging, or being tossed about like playthings.
The hare, when injured, emits a heart-rending screech that has been likened to that of the mythical Banshee, rising and falling like a siren. Poets have been haunted by it.
If our politicians aren’t moved by the cry of the coursed hare, what are the chances that they’ll listen to a plea, however eloquently voiced, to save what remains of our wildlife heritage?
