Hare bashing councillors and biodiversity

Dear Editor,
We’re in the middle of a biodiversity crisis, but you wouldn’t think it after Cork County Council’s rejection of a motion calling for a ban on hare coursing.
The Irish Hare is one of our few native wild mammals and is under severe pressure from habitat loss. The hare population has halved in the past fifty years.
Yet those councillors saw fit to endorse an activity that is a criminal offence in many jurisdictions, that involves setting dogs on members of a vulnerable wildlife species for fun and gambling.
What a message to be sending out from the corridors of political power to the general public right now: that it’s okay to set up the jewel in the crown of our wildlife heritage as live bait, to be hounded, have its bones crushed, to be tossed into the air like a rag doll and, if injured badly enough, dispatched with a karate blow to the back of its neck.
If our elected representatives can tolerate and applaud such treatment of a mammal that conservationists dub the “flagship of Irish biodiversity”, then what hope is there for the rest of the persecuted, endangered, disappearing or close to extinct species that form such a vital part of this island’s eco-system?
