246 greyhounds suffered injuries and 100 were killed at races around Ireland between January and October this year, newly released Greyhound Racing Ireland statistics reveal.
The sickening figures, obtained by Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore, show that 94 injured greyhounds were killed by track vets and another six lost their lives due to “racing fatalities”.
Limerick Stadium – the headquarters of Greyhound Racing Ireland – was the worst track in the country for deaths. Out of the 24 dogs injured there, 11 were killed by a track vet. There was also an additional “fatality” involving a greyhound dying with a head injury..
Youghal track in County Cork recorded the next highest number of deaths – 11 – and this was followed by Waterford (10 greyhounds killed), Dundalk (9 killed), Shelbourne Park (8 killed, plus 1 fatality), Clonmel (8 killed), Kilkenny (6 killed plus 2 fatalities), Curraheen Park in Cork (6 killed), Enniscorthy (6 killed), Newbridge (6 killed), Galway (4 killed plus 1 fatality), Thurles (4 killed), Mullingar (3 killed) and Tralee (2 killed plus 1 fatality).
The track with the most injuries was Greyhound Racing Ireland’s so-called flagship track – Shelbourne Park – where 38 greyhounds suffered injuries. This was followed by Limerick (24 injured), Youghal (22), Enniscorthy (21), Mullingar (17), Kilkenny (16), Cork (16), Clonmel (16), Waterford (15), Newbridge (15), Galway (14), Dundalk (14), Tralee (11) and Thurles (7).
Details were also provided about the six “racing fatalities” – two greyhounds sustained head injuries and died at Limerick and Kilkenny tracks, two died of cardiac failure at Shelbourne Park and Kilkenny tracks, one sustained a neck injury at Tralee track and one died of abdominal haemorrhage at Galway stadium.
The GRI data shows that greyhounds sustained injuries and were killed at all tracks.
The greyhounds who were “euthanised” by track vets were killed after suffering the following injuries: hock fracture/injury (55), leg fracture/injury (25), wrist fracture/injury (10), .muscle tear (2), spinal injury (2).
The full list of injuries, including treated injuries were: hock fracture (107), hock injury (15), fractured leg (33), leg injury (7), wrist fracture/injury/sprain (36), muscle injury/tear (14), fractured/injured toe/dislocated toes (15), shoulder fracture/injury/wound (5), head injury (2), spinal injury (2), tendon damage/injury (2), cut (2), abdominal bleeding (1), collapsed (1), hip injury (1), neck injury (1), skin wound (1), sudden death (1).
The January to October 2022 figures bring to 3,009 the number of greyhounds injured and 1,038 the number killed in racing at Irish tracks since 2014.
The stats only cover reported injuries and deaths which occurred at races and do not include the greyhounds injured at races and later killed elsewhere.
Deputy Whitmore also asked about injuries and deaths at greyhound trials this year. She was told that up to the end of October 2022 “whilst trialling on [GRI] licensed stadia”, 24 greyhounds were injured at trials and 9 of them were “euthanised”. There were an additional two fatalities – one greyhound suffered a head injury and another sustained an aortic tear.
The death figures represent only the tip of the iceberg. As revealed in the award-winning “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds running for their lives” documentary, thousands of greyhounds are killed behind the scenes every year simply because they are not fast enough. It included disturbing scenes of dogs being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped in a skip. One shot dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM
A damning report which Greyhound Racing Ireland attempted to hide, revealed that around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year because they don’t make the grade. The report estimated that, for example, a total of 17,962 greyhounds were culled in 2013, 2014 and 2015. They were killed for “failure to produce qualifying times”, “failure to produce desired entry level times” and for an “unacceptable decline in performance”.
How many more dogs have to suffer and die before the Irish Government stops funding greyhound racing? A RED C opinion poll commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports and Greyhound Action Ireland confirms that a two-thirds majority want the funding stopped (with just 16% in favour of it continuing), while petitions urging the government to end the funding have more than 400,000 signatures.
ACTION ALERT
Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to end the state funding that is keeping the dying greyhound “industry” afloat.
Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has been granted over €309 million of public funds, including €19.2 million for 2021, €17.6 million for 2022 and €18.2 million for 2023. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
Please contact your local TDs and urge them to oppose this funding. Visit the Oireachtas website for contact details for TDs https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/members/tds/?term=/ie/oireachtas/house/dail/33
