“I hope that communities nationwide will follow Millstreet’s lead and hand red cards to their local hare-chasing clubs” – Read John Fitzgerald’s Letter to the Editor in the Irish Mail on Sunday…

Irish Mail on Sunday, December 11th 2022
The persecuted hares of Ireland have got an early Christmas present: a decision by a compassionate County Cork community that will ease the suffering of at least some of these gentle creatures this Yuletide.
I refer to the ground-breaking news that Millstreet Town Park will not be hosting a hare coursing event this year.
For decades, hares have been forced to run from greyhounds in a wired-off enclosure in the park. Though the fixture lasted two days, most of the park had to be closed each year for almost a month to allow for handling and so-called “training” of the terrified captive hares in the build-up to coursing day.
Fans of the “sport” laughed and cheered as hares twisted and dodged to avoid getting mauled or having their bones crushed.
But this year, after petitions, appeals, and a large protest by locals, the park will be a coursing-free zone.
I hope that communities nationwide will follow Millstreet’s lead and hand red cards to their local hare-chasing clubs. They need to be told that the game is up, coursing is way past its sell-by date.

Callan, Co. Kilkenny
