millstreet town park is now coursing free copy

The residents of Millstreet, County Cork, got an early Christmas present with the news that their town park, normally closed for six weeks over December and early January, is now coursing free.

For several decades, Millstreet residents were denied the use of their town park by the local coursing club, which took over the park, closing it off to the public.

Vulnerable hares, snatched from the wild for use as live bait for greyhounds, were kept captive in a compound in the park.

Last year, a protest took place outside the park, generating much publicity, with residents expressing their anger at the closure of the amenity for cruel hare coursing.

We understand that Millstreet coursing club has moved to an alternative location in Cork so while hares won’t be running for their lives in the town park, they will be terrorised by dogs elsewhere.

The vast majority of our citizens want coursing outlawed, with a 2019 RED C poll revealing that 77% agree that the government should ban it. Hare coursing is already illegal in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

HELP THE HARES: Urgently contact Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State Malcolm Noonan and tell them to withdraw the 2022-23 hare coursing licences and also stop the hunting and shooting of Irish Hares.
