A Toxic Industry

Dear Editor. 

Even as the remains of dumped greyhounds were being unearthed from a bog in County Kildare a few weeks ago, other “sportspeople” were scouring the countryside for hares. They’ve been trapping these timid creatures for the upcoming coursing season.

As if the embattled Irish Hare hadn’t enough troubles, with the entire species sunder threat from habitat loss and the effects of Climate Change, these people are legally free to capture thousands of the animals so they can set dogs on them.

What an industry: Greyhounds rewarded for their loyalty and service to man by being taken to a bog or quarry to be whacked with a shovel or shot in the head. And hares running for their lives, to be struck and tossed about like broken toys.

The sad carcasses of dogs that once ran on tracks or across coursing fields cry out for justice, as do the animals that are fed live to greyhounds in blooding sessions…cats, rabbits, piglets, and birds.

If this industry that depends for its survival on the killing of dogs and the mauling of hares cannot be closed down, it should at least be de-funded. The millions of euro of taxpayers’ money pumped into it to keep it afloat are desperately needed elsewhere in the economy.

It could be spent on house building or the relief of excessive fuel costs instead of propping up this cesspit of corruption and animal cruelty.

Join us in demanding an end to the government’s massive grants that are keeping cruel greyhound racing afloat. Greyhound Racing Ireland has received more than a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers’ money since 2001, including €16.8 million for 2020, €19.2 million for 2021 and €17.6 million for 2022. This is unacceptable and must be stopped. Contact the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and Finance Minister now.
