Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore (Wicklow) has questioned the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage about “progress made in establishing the wildlife crime unit; the funding allocated to the new unit; the resources including the number and types of staff due to be allocated to the new unit”

Responding, Minister of State Malcolm Noonan (Green Party) stated: “It is proposed to establish this dedicated Unit during 2021. Details in relation to staffing resources and funding have not been determined at this time”

Plans for a new wildlife crime unit were announced in October with Minister Malcolm Noonan saying it would “ensure a strategic and standardised approach to dealing with illegal persecution of wildlife”.

Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien added at the time that the unit would “put a greater focus on the issue of wildlife crime, including the illegal hunting of hares.”
