“So you’re sacrificing the dogs?” – Green Party leader Eamon Ryan is questioned about his party’s backing for increased funding for cruel greyhound racing.
The Fianna Fail / Fine Gael / Green government has voted to ensure that greyhound racing will receive €19.2 million in state funding next year (a €2.4 million increase over the amount granted in 2020).
The Green Party voted with its coalition partners, contrary to the party’s animal welfare policy which states: “the Green Party seeks to cease the use of state funding for greyhound racing.”
On Virgin Media’s The Tonight Show on Thursday, 3rd December, programme presenter Matt Cooper questioned Deputy Ryan about the funding: “One thing that was in that budget that upset some Green Party members – increased money for the greyhound racing industry. Is it starting to look like you’re being outflanked by the opposition – Holly Cairns and the Social Democrats launches a campaign against the greyhound industry and there’s the Green Party in government – which you might have expected, for animal welfare rights, to agree with that position – bolstering the status quo.”
Responding, Eamon Ryan TD stated: “You don’t get everything in government. Other parties they have a particular priority. You have to acknowledge that you work with people in government.”
