Fianna Fail Senator Lisa Chambers is among the politicians shamefully pushing for pheasant shooting to be exempted from COVID19 Level 5 restrictions.
In Seanad Eireann on 6th November, Senator Chambers stated: “I have also had representations on hare coursing and the hunting season. I have been contacted by many gun clubs in my constituency of Mayo. The pheasant shooting season was due to start on 1 November. The shooting season had already been in operation for other game in September and shooting had commenced. It is a reasonable ask by gun clubs that if people comply with the 5 km rule and they go alone, they should be able to participate in shooting.”
Lisa Chambers who is on the Seanad’s Cultural and Educational Panel is a former TD who lost her Dail seat in this year’s general election. She has in the past voted against a proposed ban on hare coursing. In 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, she voted in favour of the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations which granted €80 million/€80 million/€84 million/€84 million of taxpayers’ money to horse and greyhound racing.
Also expressing support for pheasant shooters on the same day was GolfGate Senator and party colleague Aidan Davitt (Fianna Fáil, Longford Westmeath) – “I would like to echo the sentiments of Senators Malcolm Byrne and Timmy Dooley. I have discussed with the Deputy Leader herself the matter in relation to the shooting since 1st November, since the season has come in and I know you’re going to raise it with the relevant Minister so I appreciate that.”
Senator Malcolm Byrne (also Fianna Fail) claimed that pheasant shooters play an important role and that the pheasant shooting season should be extended. Timmy Dooley (Fianna Fail), meanwhile, pushed for exemptions for coursers and pheasant shooters under COVID19 Level 5 restrictions. Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer also indicated support for coursers and shooters. “I would support Senator Timmy Dooley’s remarks this morning regarding the issue of rural pursuits, whether it’s coursing or pheasant shooting,” he stated. “That is one we need to look at.”
