Hare coursers are currently lobbying Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien to allow them to extend their season of animal cruelty into the month of March. The coursers are seeking an extension to compensate them for coursing being halted for six weeks up until at least 1st December due to Covid19 restrictions.
A licence originally issued by Minister O’Brien specified that coursing could take place up until the end of February. That licence was later suspended and the coursers ordered to release 1,270 hares held in captivity for their bloodsport.
It’s bad enough that hares may be snatched from the wild in nets and used as live bait for greyhounds from October to February, but allowing this exploitation and abuse to continue into March – when the breeding season of the Irish hare is typically at its peak – would be a travesty in terms of the conservation and welfare of what is supposedly a highly protected species.
Minister O’Brien must not only dismiss any requests for an extension but keep the licence permanently suspended.
Allowing a repeated round of hare netting would add to the pressure on hares who have already suffered the ordeal of being caught and held in unnatural captivity in coursing compounds. The netting, manhandling, transportation and confinement of hares by coursers is stressful to the creatures and it is known that stress compromises their welfare. For example, the stress-related condition known as capture myopathy can claim the lives of hares during coursing activities and in the weeks and months afterwards.
Minister O’Brien is being reminded of a comment he made earlier this month in a statement welcoming the release of hares back into the countryside.
“Hares are a protected species, and are better off being in the wild rather than being held in captivity in large groups,” he stated.
He must act in the interests of a species he is charged with protecting and refuse to allow coursing to continue. This historic move for wildlife would be widely welcomed in Ireland and around the world. A RED C opinion poll conducted last year showed that a 77% majority of Irish citizens want coursing banned, with just 9% wanting it to continue.
ACTION ALERT
