The views of 2019 Local Election Candidates (Offaly) in relation to animal cruelty issues. Please support compassionate candidates and reject those who defend animal cruelty.

Cllr John Carroll (Independent, Offaly County Council, Birr)
In May 2010, the Offaly Express quoted John Carroll as saying: “Minister Gormley is a long way removed from rural Ireland’s traditions [in his move to ban stag hunting]. First it’s stag hunting, but there will be more down the line.”

Clare Claffey (Social Democrats, Offaly, Birr)
The Social Democrats are in favour of a ban on fox hunting, hare coursing and fur farming. The party’s animal welfare policy states: “The Social Democrats strongly advocate animal rights and recognise animals as intelligent, sentient beings capable of complex thought and of experiencing pain and suffering…We are in favour of harsher penalties for animal cruelty” See the full policy at https://www.socialdemocrats.ie/our-policies/

Cllr Eamon Dooley (Fianna Fail, Offaly County Council, Birr)
In October 2010, Cllr Eamon Dooley sponsored a race at Mullingar greyhound track.

Cllr Eddie Fitzpatrick (Fianna Fail, Offaly County Council, Edenderry)
In August 2015, Cllr Fitzpatrick sponsored a race at Mullingar greyhound track.

Cllr John Foley (Independent, Offaly County Council, Edenderry)
In October 2010, Cllr Foley sponsored a race at Mullingar greyhound track.

Pippa Hackett (Green Party, Edenderry)
“Animal Welfare: Often overlooked, animal welfare is a huge community issue. There is much potential for welfare projects (local authority, schools or community based) which deal with many of these issues, being piloted here in Laois and Offaly.” (from Pippa Hackett profile on Green Party website).

The Green Party is in favour of a ban on bloodsports, including fox hunting, hare coursing, hare hunting and mink hunting. It also supports a ban on fur farming and an end to the Department of Agriculture’s cruel snaring and killing of badgers. Cllr Peter Ormond (Fianna Fail, Offaly County Council, Birr)
In October 2010, Cllr Ormond sponsored a race at Mullingar greyhound track.

Cllr Liam Quinn (Fine Gael, Offaly County Council, Edenderry)
In May 2010, the Offaly Express reported on a pro-bloodsports motion put forward by Liam Quinn. The motion called for support for the RISE hunting and hare coursing campaign.
