Parish in Armagh urged to scrap greyhound track fundraiser

3 Aug

A parish in Armagh is being urged to say NO to the cruel greyhound industry and scrap plans to hold a fundraiser at a greyhound track where dogs suffer and die.

The Parish of Lower Killeavy has organised a Night at the Dogs fundraiser at Dundalk greyhound stadium – one of the worst tracks in Ireland for dog injuries and deaths. In the past three and a half years, 106 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 44 were killed by a track vet.

Parishioners are being urged to “get the family together for a great night out” to raise funds for a “Raise the Roof” restoration of Saint Peter & Saint Paul Church in Bessbrook.

In a message to the Archdiocese of Armagh, ICABS pointed out that the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes it clear that it is “contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly” and that therefore, an alternative venue for the fundraiser should be chosen.

Track fundraisers are helping to keep the cruel and dying greyhound industry afloat – through 30-40% ticket commissions and food and drink sales/gambling on the night. Urge the Parish of Lower Killeavy to show compassion for the dogs and choose a different venue for its fundraiser.
