SMYTHS TOY VOUCHERS IN SHAMEFUL GREYHOUND TRACK PROMO
The Irish Council Against Blood Sports is urging Smyth’s Toys to act to remove its toy vouchers from an Irish Greyhound Board promotion aimed at luring children to tracks.

In a letter to Smyth’s Toys director, Tony Smyth, ICABS highlighted the IGB’s “Communion & Confirmation Celebrations At The Dogs” offer which includes a “free €5 Smyths toy store voucher”. The offer is available at 8 greyhound tracks – including Limerick track (the worst in Ireland for dog deaths) and Mullingar (the worst for dog injuries).

A brochure advertising the promotion can be seen at

We have appealled to Smyths Toys to follow Tesco Ireland, Electric Ireland, Toyota Ireland and other companies who have disassociated from this cruel industry in which dogs suffer and die.

“As we are sure you will agree, it is entirely inappropriate for any gambling business to target children, particularly when there is a risk they will be exposed to upsetting scenes of dogs suffering injuries and crying out in pain,” we stated in our appeal to Tony Smyth. “In the past three years alone, over a thousand greyhounds have suffered injuries at tracks around Ireland and 385 were destroyed by track vets. This includes 105 injuries reported at Shelbourne Park and 24 dogs killed, 144 injured at Limerick stadium, with 44 killed and 211 dogs injured at Mullingar track, with 45 killed.”

We also told Mr Smyth about the 2,649 greyhounds who have been destroyed in Irish pounds in the past eight years and the thousands of greyhounds who go missing each year, presumed killed when found to be too slow.

“We hope Smyths will take action to disassociate its brand from this industry and remove your toy vouchers from the greyhound track promotion,” we added.
