how many horses killed on irish racecourses

A government Minister who has approved €128 million in funding for horse racing over the past two years has this week been questioned about the number of horse fatalities during races.A government Minister who has approved €128 million in funding for horse racing over the past two years has this week been questioned about the number of horse fatalities during races.

Agriculture Minister Michael Creed was asked by Dublin North TD, Clare Daly, for “the number of horses injured and killed at racecourses and point-to-point events here”.
Despite the government channelling over €900 million of taxpayers’ money into horse racing since 2001, Minister Creed was unable to provide an answer, instead redirecting the written question to Horse Racing Ireland.

“The question raised by the Deputy is an operational matter for Horse Racing Ireland,” Minister Creed replied. “I will request officials in my Department to refer the question to Horse Racing Ireland for direct reply to the Deputy.”

When the Irish Council Against Blood Sports recently contacted Horse Racing Ireland about horse injuries and deaths, the body claimed not to have the relevant details.
Yesterday, the day after Minister Creed’s response, 13-year-old Cantlow became the latest victim of horse racing in Ireland after collapsing and dying following a race in Punchestown, County Kildare. According to the Racing Post: “There are extremely distressing scenes at Punchestown, where Cantlow has collapsed in front of racegoers on the walkway back to the unsaddling enclosure”

Meanwhile, it was reported last week, that the 2017 Irish Grand National winner – eight-year-old Our Duke – died from a heart attack. Trainer Jessica Harrington tweeted “Our Duke died this morning following his usual morning exercise. He suffered a massive heart attack” https://www.independent.ie/sport/horse-racing/irish-grand-national-winner-our-duke-has-died-from-a-heart-attack-36823529.html

Another Irish horse, Lilbitluso, died last week at the 2018 Grand National Race Meeting at Aintree https://www.animalaid.org.uk/lilbitluso-killed/ The previous month, four Irish horses were killed after falling at Cheltenham.

Horses are also being forced to run “in atrocious conditions” and whipped with “excessive force” and “excessive frequency”. As reported by the Irish Independent, after winning the Irish Grand National race on April 2nd (part of the Fairyhouse horse racing festival), Wexford jockey JJ Slevin was “hit with a seven-day ban as the Fairyhouse stewards found him to have used his whip with excessive force” on horse General Principle. Jockey David Mullins was also “suspended for three days for a similar offence”.
Footage of the race, showing the horses being shamefully whipped as they approach the finish line can be seen at https://twitter.com/AtTheRaces/status/980840279346262016
While details about injuries and deaths during races in Ireland is currently unknown, figures compiled by Animal Aid show that more and more Irish horses are dying on racecourses in the UK.

Since January 1st, 27 Irish horses have died there. This includes the deaths of 3 Irish horses on Monday at the same race meeting in Hexham. Flemerina “fell fatally”, Skywards Reward broke a foreleg on the approach to a hurdle and was destroyed and Nelly La Rue broke a foreleg between fences and was also destroyed.
In 2017, at least 83 Irish horses lost their lives at UK races – even higher than in 2016 when 76 deaths were recorded. For more details, see http://www.horsedeathwatch.com
