VIDEO: Irish greyhounds chained by neck to grotesque rotating device

23 May

There are fresh concerns about the treatment of dogs in the Irish greyhound industry after the emergence of a disturbing video showing around 20 greyhounds chained to a rotating device which forces them to repeatedly walk around in circles.

The footage, said to be from an Irish greyhound kennel, was highlighted on the Twitter page of Italian greyhound protection group, Pet Levrieri, along with the message “#Ireland #AnimalAbuse This is #GreyhoundRacing“.

Those who have seen the footage have expressed disgust, describing it as appalling, sad and sadistic.

The sight of dogs chained by collars around their necks being led around in circles is likely to repel even more people from the cruel greyhound industry. It has already experienced a 50 per cent drop in track attendance, as well as major falls in sponsorship, race meetings and betting.

This sickening video has come to light in a month when the former chairman of the Irish Greyhound Board shamefully said it was “absolutely” okay to kill thousands of dogs and the current chairman described greyhounds as “raw material.

Speaking at a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee on 4th May, IGB chairman Phil Meaney commented: “the industry supplies the raw material in the form of greyhounds to greyhound racing internationally.” Meanwhile, during an interview on RTE Radio 1’s Liveline, the chairman of the Irish Greyhound, Owners and Breeders Federation referred to greyhounds as “raw product”.

The greyhound industry is inherently cruel with dog injuries and deaths, the dumping of dogs and the disappearance of thousands of greyhounds every year.

ACTION ALERT

Don’t attend greyhound races or community fund-raisers held at greyhound tracks (these are a significant source of funding for the greyhound industry).
