Anti-coursing TDs forced to vote against coursing ban

24 Jul

Politicians opposed to hare coursing were forced to vote against a ban on the cruel activity, Maureen O’Sullivan TD has told TV3’s “Tonight With Vincent Browne”.

Speaking on the show last Thursday, 21st July, the Dublin Central TD stated: “I thought we were going to have more free votes. I tried to bring in a bill to ban live hare coursing. There was no free vote on that. And I do know that there are people in all the parties who voted against my bill who would like to have voted with it. We had documented proof of the cruelty to hares and the cruelty to greyhounds also. There is an alternative. But whatever this coursing lobby is and the power that they have on the parties, it’s just incredible. I was so disappointed that we couldn’t have a free vote on that.”

Deputy O’Sullivan’s bill to ban coursing was rejected after 114 TDs (most from Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, Sinn Fein and Labour) shamefully voted against it. To see how individual TDs voted, please see below.

ACTION ALERT

Join the campaign for a ban on hare coursing at
http://www.banbloodsports.com

Join us in thanking the compassionate TDs who supported the bill. Complain to those who voted against the bill. Tell them that their stance on this animal cruelty issue means hares will continue to suffer and die in coursing. Urge them to show compassion for Irish wildlife and vote differently next time a similar bill comes before the Dail.
