The South China Morning Post (SCMP) has reported on the campaign to stop the export of Irish greyhounds to China.
The article – entitled “Stop servicing Macau’s greyhound ‘hellhole’: global campaign to end transportation of racers to notorious Canidrome” – focuses on efforts to persuade Lufthansa Airline to stop carrying greyhounds to region. http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/economy/article/1945544/stop-servicing-macaus-greyhound-hellhole-global-campaign-end#comments
In an appalling response, Lufthansa told SCMP that it does not take responsibility for the purpose for which animals are transported. This despite being made aware of the cruelty and death suffered by dogs who end up at the Canidrome track.
“We are not able to provide any binding determination nor take responsibility for the purpose for which animals are making their journey,” the Lufthansa spokesperson stated. “Should we become aware of any abuse in terms of keeping these animals, we regularly report this to the competent authorities.”
Quoted in the report, Albano Martins of Macau-based Anima (Society for the Protection of Animals), said: “Our aim is to see Ireland banning the exportation of greyhounds to Macau … If that happened, the Canidrome would probably close down in six months’ time.”
A petition calling on Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Agriculture Minister Michael Creed to stop the export of Irish greyhounds to China has been signed by 300,000 people.
