The Irish Council Against Blood Sports says “Shame on You” to the three Fine Gael MEPs who yesterday (28th October) voted against an EU Budget Amendment aimed at ending massive subsidies to breeders of bulls slowly tortured to death in bullrings.
The three MEPs – Mairead McGuinness, Deirdre Clune and Sean Kelly – disgracefully voted against the amendment despite being well aware of the appalling suffering inflicted on bulls in the blood-soaked bullrings.
The Budget Amendment states that “any appropriations from the budget should not be used for the financing of lethal bull fighting activities…such funding is a clear violation of the European Convention for the Protection of Animals Kept for Farming Purposes (Council Directive 98/58/EC).”
As it turned out, their shameful stance did not affect the final outcome. The amendment was passed with an overwhelming majority – For 438 (64%), Against 199 (29%), Abstentions 50 (7%). The subsidies, paid annually to breeders of bulls destined for torture and death in Spanish bullrings, now look set to finally stop.
We are delighted to note that most of the Irish MEPs did the right thing and voted to end these payments to prop up a barbaric industry which involves the slow torture to death by stabbing and spearing of innocent bulls for “sport” and “entertainment”.
Brian Hayes MEP (FG) who abstained in a similar vote last year has this time joined our other MEPs – Marian Harkin, Nessa Childers, Luke Ming Flanagan, Lynn Boylan, Matt Carthy, and Liadh Ni Riada – in voting to stop the subsidies. Brian Crowley MEP was absent for medical reasons. We sincerely thank these MEPs for supporting the amendment that will stop the flow of EU taxpayers’ money to cruel bullfighting.
We simply cannot understand why Fine Gael’s Mairead McGuinness, Deirdre Clune and Sean Kelly would vote against this amendment. It beggars belief that they would turn a blind eye to the appalling cruelty of bullfighting. Shame on them!
