Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney and his Department are trying to dupe the public into believing that hare coursers “go to great lengths to ensure the highest standards of hare and greyhound welfare”. Minister Coveney made this ludicrous statement in response to a Dail Question from Maureen O’Sullivan TD, despite being very well aware of the cruelty involved in hare coursing.
As a dog lover, Minister Coveney has another good reason to ban this barbarity. A document recently uncovered by ICABS reveals that the Irish Coursing Club is urging owners to put unwanted greyhounds to sleep instead of keeping them or rehoming them.
Please join us in renewing our appeal to Minister Coveney to remove an exemption for hare coursing from the Animal Health and Welfare Act. The exemption allows coursers to practice their shameful bloodsport without fear of being prosecuted for animal cruelty.
Simon Coveney, TD
Minister for Agriculture
